About PIDEC
The Prototype Inter-Departmental Design Challenge (PIDEC) is a faculty-wide engineering competition established by the University of Lagos Engineering Society (ULES) in 2021. Designed to champion practical, hands-on fabrication and interdisciplinary synergy, PIDEC provides a high-stakes arena where students move from conceptual blueprints to working physical hardware.
Every edition tasks multi-departmental student teams with solving local industrial challenges — from renewable mini-grids and automated agricultural harvesters to smart waste-sorting systems. With departmental pride on the line, PIDEC forces engineering students to master welding, 3D printing, embedded firmware, and project management, creating a vibrant pipeline of job-ready innovators with tangible portfolios.
Flagship Programs & Events
Key conferences, hackathons, and activities organized by PIDEC
The Annual PIDEC Grand Showcase
Exhibition where departmental teams demonstrate physical operating machines under faculty scrutiny.
Fabrication & Machine Shop Clinics
Practical training sessions covering lathe machining, welding, PCB routing, and composite forming.
Faculty Technical Review Board
Critique sessions with university professors and senior engineers assessing commercial viability.
